The Colorful Puffleg Story
The Colorful Puffleg is a critically endangered hummingbird species found in Columbia. Fewer than 250 birds are believed to exist, although further field research is necessary to determine its range and population. The Colorful Puffleg’s greatest risk comes from its extremely small range and the destruction of its habitat via logging and grazing. Initial efforts to save the bird include further field research, possible purchase of land and environmental education programs with local community schools.
Clos LaChance Winery has teamed up with the Hummingbird Society (www.hummingbirdsociety.org) to prevent the extinction of the Colorful Puffleg. A portion of the proceeds on the sale of each bottle will be donated to the Hummingbird Society specifically for its efforts to save the Colorful Puffleg Hummingbird.
The 2004 Juan Fernandez Firecrown and the 2005 Honduran Emerald Meritage have raised over $30,000 for their respective hummingbird species.
Vineyards
Fruit for the 2006 Colorful Puffleg Meritage is sourced from the Clos LaChance Estate Vineyard in San Martin. The 150-acre Estate Vineyard was planted in 1999. Hot sunny days throughout the growing season, coupled with cool ocean breezes in the evenings, allow for increased grape hang-time, and the further development of flavors and complexities.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand harvested, hand sorted and de-stemmed to closed top tanks to cold soak for 24-48 hours. The must was inoculated and pumped over twice a day at the beginning and end of fermentation, and up to 4 times per day at peak fermentation, therefore increasing color and flavor intensity. Once complete, the wine was pressed off the skins and barrel aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak and 10% new American oak, with the balance to used French and American oak.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes
Aromas of ripe blackberries, candied plums, cocoa and black cherries. Very smooth entry with mellow, fruit flavors. Lots of complexity. Currants, dried cranberries with a hint of rosemary. The finish is incredibly long, with cherry and a touch of vanilla.
