Vineyards
Fruit for the Special Selections Meritage is sourced 100% from the Clos LaChance Vineyard in San Martin. The 150-acre Estate Vineyard was planted in 1999-2000. Nearly 20 varietals were planted, along with 60 separate clones—providing our winemaker with a spice rack of blending wines. Hot sunny days throughout the growing season, coupled with cool ocean breezes in the evenings, allow for increased grape hang-time and the further development of flavors and complexities. Computerized vineyard maintenance and data recording systems (weather stations, leaf and soil sensors, automated irrigation and fergitation) were also installed onsite, ensuring the highest quality fruit possible.
Winemaking
The different grape varietals that make up this wine were all hand-harvested and processed separately. Fermentations took place in both open and closed top containers. The closed top tank lots fermented for 1-2 weeks with pump-overs 3-4 times per day at peak fermentation before being barreled down to age.
The open top tank lots were destemmed to tank, cold soaked for 4 days, and punched down 4 times per day prior to barrel aging. All varietals aged for 24 months in 60% new French oak before being blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes
A beautiful, deep ruby red. Aromas of ripe black cherries, anise, tobacco and clove/cinnamon spice. A hint of sweet vanilla and rosemary. Dried cherries and licorice on the entry with a lush blackberry dominating the mid-palate. Tannins and acid are both very prevalent, yet balanced, which makes this a beautiful wine with food. The finish is long, with hints of currants and again the rosemary.
